The History of Kufri: From a Sleepy Hamlet to a Tourist Hub

The name ‘Kufri’ is derived from the word ‘Kufr’, which means lake in the local language. The British Raj received control of the region after the Sugauli Treaty because it had been part of the Kingdom of Nepal.

The British found the location in 1819, but it stayed unknown to most people for many years. The period after 1930 and especially the years following 1970 marked the time when Kufri became a famous tourist destination. The location now serves as a major tourist route called the “Golden Triangle”, which connects Shimla with Chail.

Elevation and Geography

Kufri sits at a majestic average elevation of 2,720 meters (8,923 feet). Its high-altitude location ensures that it remains cool throughout the summer and transforms into a white wonderland during the winter months.

  • Summer Temperature: 15°C to 30°C (April to June)
  • Winter Temperature: -2°C to 10°C (December to February)
  • Snowfall: Usually occurs between late December and early March.
